University cell phones and service plans are provided by Rogers Communications.

Plans & Packages

There are two plans available to the York Community:

Voice, Text, & Data

Plan Cost $19.05/month (includes 6GB of data, unlimited SMS/MMS)
Device Cost  The price of the device (see above list) - a 65% discount on eligible hardware
Additional Costs  Adding unlimited long distance within Canada is an additional $3.13/month

If more than 6GB of data is used in any month, the monthly charge will automatically change from $19.05 to $49.75 for that month

US & INTERNATIONAL ROAMING Rogers subscribers do not need to contact Telecom to add a roaming package to their service. Roaming charges will be applied automatically while travelling, for package fees and information regarding countries that are included and or excluded from York roaming packages please see the following document for associated cost Rogers Roaming Charges US and International (pdf).

TO ELIMINATE DATA USAGE CHARGES PLEASE make sure THAT YOUR PHONE IS SET TO "AIRPLANE MODE" WHILE USING THESE MODES OF TRANSPORTATION. BACKGROUND APPLICATIONS MAY USE CELLULAR DATA without your knowledge when you turn on your phone or transition from airplane mode to Wi-Fi.

Subscribers who are still on Telus service will still need to contact Telecom department at extension 44357 or cellular@yorku.ca to request the addition of roaming packages and available plans.

Is the cost for new devices charged up-front or built into the monthly fee?

The cost for new devices (after discount) will be applied to the first month’s bill as a one-time only charge.

Contract terms are always 2 years, and in the event a service is cancelled prior to the end of the contract term, applicable charges will be applied to the account. The Early Cancellation Charge is equal to the financial amount of the wireless device subsidy multiplied by the number of months remaining in the Subsidy Device Contract Term at the time of termination divided by the total number of months of the Subsidy Device Contract Term plus taxes.

Who is eligible to move to a new Rogers plan?

Any new or existing device is eligible to move to a new Rogers plan.

  • Transitioning to the new Rogers plans will mean cost savings for nearly all devices
  • If a department wishes to move to the new Rogers plans prior to the expiry of their existing contract, there is a $100 contract termination fee, plus the remaining device balance, plus $50 unlocking fee (in some cases)
  • The department will be responsible for all such fees
  • Please consult with Telecom to confirm any costs and resultant savings

What plans and options are available?

There are two primary plans available to the York Community:
• Voice only plan for $4.75 a month - 50% discount on eligible hardware.
• Voice and Data plan for $19.05 a month – includes a 65% on eligible hardware and 6GB of data (not shared). If more than 6GB is used in a month, the monthly charge will automatically change to $45.00 for any month where usage is greater than 6GB.
• Adding unlimited long distance within Canada is an additional $3.13 monthly.

What is the term of the new contracts?

All contracts will have a 2-year term.

How can I find out the contract status on my existing users?

Telecommunications can forward this information to you. You will need to send a list of phone numbers with your request to cellular@yorku.ca

Can I stay with Telus even after my current contract expires?

As there is a substantial cost savings earned by moving to Rogers, all users are encouraged to do so after the expiry of any existing contract. In many cases, cancelling an existing contract will still be a cost savings – contact Telecom to confirm this for an existing contract cellular@yorku.ca.

Can I retain and use my existing device and phone number with Rogers?

Yes! You can keep your existing device and phone number. Contact Telecommunications to arrange for a new Rogers SIM card to be swapped into the phone. There may be a $50 unlocking fee charged by the carrier to do so.

What happens to my existing hardware if I get a new device?

Devices that are no longer under a university cellular contract are considered surplus and—in compliance with the
university surplus asset policy—shall be returned to UIT/Telecommunications for disposal or redeployment at the time of service transfer to Rogers.

How does Roam Like Home work?

The first time you use your phone network in another country where Roam Like Home is covered, you will be charged. The charge is $12/24 hours in the United States and $20/24 hours internationally. After every 24 hours another charge will apply. There is no limit.

Would I be charged if data was turned off and use only WIFI?

Any usage on a network is subject to a charge. If a single text is sent or received, the full charge of Roam Like Home will apply for 24 hours. If you do not ant to use any services on your network, ensure you are using Airplane mode on your phone.

If I use my phone on day 1 and 3 of my trip, but not on day 2, what charges would apply?

You would only be charged for the two days your phone was being used on the network. Charges are only applied for each 24-hour period where the phone is used. No usage no charge.
*Please note that it’s 24 hours from the first usage and not actual start of the day
