Printing Double-sided

What

Printing on both sides of paper saves trees and helps cut the cost of supplies.

Who

Anyone printing to double-sided-capable printers at York University. Printers that can automatically print on both sides of a sheet of paper have what is called a "duplexer". You may also adapt these instructions to your personal printer if it has a duplexer.  

How

Option 1: Set all your documents to print double sided by default

  1. (On Windows XP) Go to Start - Settings - Printers and Faxes - Right click on the desired printer - Select Printing Preferences - Click on the "Finishing" tab - check "Print on both sides" - Apply - OK

Option 2: How to set individual jobs to print double sided

MS Word 2003

    1. 1. Go to File and from the drop-down list choose Print

 

    1. In Print window, click on Properties button on the top right-hand side
    2. Under Layout tab choose your preferred setting under 'Print on Both Sides (duplex)' box and click OK.
      Note: 'Flip on Long Edge': Prints pages that read like a book. Flip on Short Edge: Prints pages that read by flipping over like a notepad.
    3. Click on Paper/Quality tab and select Draft under 'Quality settings' and Black & White under 'Color' section
    4. Click on the Apply button to apply these settings

 

  1. Close the Properties dialog box, and then click OK again to close the Print dialog box
  2. Print the file

MS Word 2010

    1. Go to File and from the drop-down list choose Print
    2. Under Settings click on Print One Sided drop down and choose your preferred option Print on Both Sides

 

    1. Click on Printer Properties, select Paper/Quality tab and choose Draft under 'Quality settings' and Black & White under 'Color' section

 

  1. Click on OK button to apply the settings
  2. Click on Print button to print the file

Mac OS: Printing PDFs Double Sided

    1. Select Print from the File menu
    2. On the printer window click on Printer button

 

    1. Place a check mark on Two-Sided
    2. Click on Print button to print the file

 

Black & White and Draft Printing set up:

MS Word 2003

      1. Go to File and from the drop-down list choose Print

 

      1. In Print window, click on Properties button on the top right-hand side

 

      1. Click on Paper/Quality tab and select Draft under 'Quality settings' and Black & Whiteunder 'Color' section
      2. Click on Apply button to apply the settings

 

      1. Close the Properties dialog box, and then click OK again to close the Print dialog box
      2. Print the file

MS Word 2010

      1. Go to File and from the drop-down list choose Print
      2. Click on Printer Properties, select Paper/Quality tab and choose Draft under 'Quality settings' and Black & White under 'Color' section

 

      1. Click on OK button to apply the settings
      2. Click on Print button to print the file

Print Black & White and Draft By Default

      1. Click on the Start button | Setting | Printers and Faxes

 

      1. Right click on the default printer and select Printing preferences

 

      1. Click on Paper/Quality tab and select Draft under 'Quality settings' and Black & Whiteunder 'Color' section
      2. Click on Apply button to apply the settings

 

    1. Click OK to close the window
